Platz, William T.
WAUNAKEE - William Thomas Platz, age 73, died in hospice at the Madison Veterans Hospital, Sunday, May 17, 2015. A lifelong Madison and Dane County resident, Willy attended Nakoma school, graduated from Madison West High School, attended UW-Platteville, joined the U.S. Army, served two tours in Vietnam, first as a crew chief on an Chinook helicopter, and after Warrant Officer training as a Huey medevac Pilot.
Bill graduated from Michigan State University and UW-Madison Law School. He practiced law privately for many years in Madison, also mentoring students at UW Law School Legal Defense Project.
After retiring, he enjoyed bicycling Wisconsin trails and trekking the Alaskan wilderness alone. He was a kind and compassionate man, with a quick wit. He will be deeply missed by many friends, old and new, all of whom he delighted in.
He is survived by a brother, Warren A. Platz of Verona; a sister, Connie (Steve) Weiss; nieces, Kathryn (Bill) Heron, and Lisa (Sean) Kenny, all of Portland, Ore.; and cousins around the country and world. His parents, William A. Platz and Gertrude D. Platz predeceased him.
Bill did not want a funeral, but friends may gather with family at HOYT PARK SHELTER, Madison, on Thursday, Aug. 13, 2015, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. to celebrate his life.
